2006
Mt. Washington New Hampshire January 19-24, 2006
January 22, 2006, was
sunny with low wind and five TATCers made it up the Lion Head Winter Trail to
the summit of Mt. Washington,
N.H. As we climbed,
temperatures transitioned from the high 20s down to plus 1 degree with 54 mile
per hour sustained winds on top. That's a good day on Mt. Washington.
Several days earlier the summit experienced low visibility and sustained
winds of over 100 mph. The top is flat with many buildings,
including a closed visitor's center, year round weather observatory, numerous
communication towers, and sheds for equipment, as well as the end of the cog
railroad (not pictured).Several dozen other hikers were on top at the same
time, some via different trail routes. Wind gusts and frigid temperatures
forced us to come down after not quite an hour. The summiteers were Al
Bellinoff, Bruce Davidson, Duncan Fairlie, Bob Adkisson, and Mal Higgins.
