Back
Bay Tram Tours
Come take the wildest ride of your
life!......BBRF volunteers have made this one of the
most successful projects for BBRF. Thousands of passengers have taken the ride
which leaves Little Island City Park in Sandbridge
and follows the west dike trail through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to False Cape
State Park.
WINTER TRAM SCHEDULE: These are wonderful opportunities to
observe a variety of migrating waterfowl amidst the beautiful backdrop of Back Bay. Other than these special monthly tram
tours, there is no public access to the Refuge’s impoundment areas from
November through March, in order to minimize disturbance to wintering birds.
Advance reservations required. They will
be on a first-come, first-served basis. Call the Refuge at
721-2412. Those holding reservations should meet at the Refuge
headquarters parking lot at 12:45 p.m. the day of the trip. The tram will
depart at 1 p.m., returning to the parking lot by 3:00 p.m. Participants are
advised to dress warmly, as the trams are unheated, open air vehicles.
Binoculars, birding field guide books, and sturdy footwear are also

SPRING/SUMMER/FALL
TRAM SCHEDULE: During spring,
summer and fall, the tram departs at 9:00 A.M. and takes roughly one hour to
reach the contact station in False
Cape. While passing
through the refuge, passengers are likely to see a variety of wildlife, which
many BBRF tram drivers can help identify, including: ducks, geese, swans,
nutria, white-tailed deer, rabbits, foxes, turtles, snakes, ospreys, egrets and
great blue herons. Once in False Cape, passengers have two hours to hike west to Back
Bay, east to the beach and Atlantic Ocean, or
south to Wash Woods. Anywhere is great for a picnic. In False Cape State Park, the passengers will be greeted
by a ranger or volunteer who will mention the assets
of the park, including: historical sites, and wildlife such as those seen in
the refuge, feral horses and feral pigs. The tram returns to Little Island City
Park at approximately 12:45 P.M. For tram information please call 721-7666 or
426-3643.
